Using L4D Textures/Materials in Hammer

All you have to do is Run the VPK Extractor, browse to your left4dead folder, something like this [C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\] Extract the file pak01_dir.vpk

Since the L4D SDK isnt out, I am running hammer using the CSS configs. So what I'm doing is setting the extraction folder to my CSS installation which is something like this [C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\<steamid>\counter-strike source\cstrike\]

They then should work in Hammer!

Please note the extraction process can take over 10 minutes!

At the end of the extraction process it should say this --
Done, 17168 succeeded, 0 failed, 17168 total.

EDIT: Can a moderator possibly pin this thread so people don't post duplicates asking how to do it?


EDIT: I noticed when I was browsing the textures in hammer, some of the extracted materials were messed up. showing random screwy colors, although im sure if applied they will display properly in L4D

Most likely you'd have to run those though the materials fix. Though its not a big deal, since you can't compile the full thing.

I did come across one thing, when i compiled a map and ran it in L4D it ran just fine, of course texture errors since i havent copied the CSS mats to L4D.

But then when I extracted the L4D vpk into the CSS mats folder, and i used some of the L4D textures, when i loaded the map into L4D it crashed giving me a null error.

I extracted the files but do not know how you open them in hammer. all i get are VTF and VMT files which valve does not see when i select add textures, can some one point out the stupidly obvious thing im missing?
