There is an interesting theory I came across on the web that The G-Man is actually Gordon Freeman from the future. Much older naturally.

That could be why Gordon Doesn't talk - because we would figure it out from his voice that he really is the G-Man.

Add glasses and a goatee to the G-Man and this is what you get:

I don't think that even valve know what G-man is. I'm pretty sure they are making up the story as they go. I can almost bet my bottom dollar that they don't have a story arch or plot planned out for the whole series.

As for my theory, they'll fuck the storyline because it'll end up being gordon who delivers the corrupt specimen to *himself* at the start of HL1 and the whole story will spin 360 and everyone save a few mentally retarded people will go "awwwwww FUCK YOU VALVE" and the franchise will be ruined forever. It has to be, it's too perfect so far.

If that were to happen you would have to deliver the specimen and then as the facility crumbles you would wake up and find out that the whole series was just the dream of some fat old WoW player who'd fallen asleep on his keyboard.
