Kicking people with no mic
Is it right to kick someone in the lobby if they have no mic, I have done it many times but I feel a bity guilty after they do it. I know from experience that the xbox's headsets are a bit flimsy but it seems like half the population of people who play Left 4 Dead onkline have no mic.

I don't get this mic obsession, I have no mic and I have no problem finishing all campaigns in expert. I sometimes hate mic users cuz they just wont SHUT UP, that i cant even hear where the zombies are comming from. Overall I do a better job than mic users, if you kick me for that reason your bad, less one good teammate.

I don't have a mic, but that's because mine is dead currently...
But I do fine without it. People with mics often don't shut up and are constantly talking about stuff with no relevance to the game and are thus quite annoying if you're trying to listen to stuff...
And then they wonder why they didn't hear that Tank breathing -_-

It's a fine line. Not having a mic isn't as big a handicap on PC, as if you REALLY need to say something, you can type it. You've not got that 'safety net' on Xbox. On the same note though, I can understand how having people jabbering constantly can be offputting too. We have alltalk on in the versus matches, but that's so lighthearted taunting can take place. In an expert campaign, that'd be a bit distracting.

Eh, I think it's fine. And there is a number of reasons really. One, there are so many servers and players on L4D at any time, that getting kicked from one game is really no big deal, and shouldn't be to anyone. You'll find another in half a minute. Second, if it's your lobby than you pretty much gain the right to pick and chose how things go. Whether it's asking everyone to randomise, or use microphones.
The only downside of this approach in my experience is that it's a ridiculous wait to get all 8 people on microphones. Probably easier in campaign mode.

I prefer people with a mic, and I'll occasionally get into the mood of kicking people without a mic. I feel that especially in this type of game it helps (on xbox) so that you can strategize and work better together.
However there are those people that won't shut up, but that's them not the mic. Just because someone has a mic, doesn't mean they are one of these people.

I get pissed if people don't have mics. The fucking Xbox comes with a mic so there is no excuse to not have one.
If I get boomer'ed and someone gets pounced or smokered etc and they don't have a mic..they are pretty fucked because most of the time you will not know if they are in trouble. They will take more damage then they would if they had a mic on.
Same goes for me. If I am SI'ed and saying into the mic that I need help, I will take more damage because no one else has a mic. If I do not know the person who doesn't talk then I will kick him.

Really... I guess I never thought of that, but it makes sense since there's no keyboard. So not having a mic on XBox means you have no communication.
Anyway, I find the game so much more fun with mics. Without them, you're just playing with smarter bots.

In a good team mics aren't needed.
Seriously the only reasons you would need a mic is to tell someone to do something like.. "pick up this item" "get in the corner!" "Im pounced far away from you guys at XXX!!"
And in a good team you shouldn't have to say those things if everyone is doing their job and know what to do and sticks with the group.
so the less a team needs a mic the better they are actually.

Whenever I'm in a lobby for VS, I always make sure to join whatever team has the most players with mics.
It makes things a lot easier, and it's more fun than sitting in silence for about an hour.
That said, I've never voted to kick someone because they didn't have a mic.

I like this game because its supposed to be social. When I get stuck with a team that has no mics I get frustrated because it gets too quiet and lonely and I just get bored...

Exactly. The pure torture of having to hear the occasional moron babble on about what they did at school today or girls they hooked up with or talking like a GANGSTA is enough to make me throw my headset in the microwave. I'm convinced that MANY (please note: not ALL) mic users are kids who nobody wants to listen to IRL, so they play L4D not really to play the game, but to force random strangers to listen to them talk.

I think you guys are overeacting. I play on Xbox and once in a while i will get someone who just won't shut the fuck up.
Most of the time though the people that have mics are mature adults, that know how to play.

I play almost exclusively campaigns. If I jump into a lobby (not quick match) and no one's using their mics I'll just leave. If there's not at least 1 person on mic, it's a no go for me. I think it's necessary to have mics on anything over normal difficulty. I'm playing on advanced right now. I'm sure some of you can play advanced alone with your eyes closed playing with your toes, or whatever, but I think on that difficulty you might as well not even bother without communication.

I could understand that mics might be essential for an Expert level campaign. In that kind of a setting, every second counts. If you are pounced and nobody notices, you can be killed pretty quickly.
However, playing Versus doesn't really require a mic. All you have to do is pay attention to where your three team-mates are and watch their health when they are not in sight. Without a mic, you run the risk of your team-mates not paying attention and leaving you behind or taking forever to help you out.
As far as the social aspect, I don't play to talk to people. If I wanted to talk to someone, I have a family and friends that are readily available. I don't need to join up with a bunch of random people online to talk to. When I am playing videogames, I am in the mood to play videogames. Not chatter.

I don't know. What if your going to formulate a decent ambush/attack plan. You need communication for that.

This is a very valid point. I know full well that attacking alone as the Special Infected does little to no good against a well coordinated team. If you have stragglers or rushers, it seems pretty obvious to take them out first, then ambush those who come to their aid.
I guess the way I have always done it is to wait my spawn until at least two of my teammates are ready as well. Then, it's just a matter of playing your role. If you are the Boomer, it's your responsibility to open the ambush (if they aren't out in the open. In that case, it's probably best to wait until after the Smoker). If you get to be the Smoker, grab whoever hasn't gotten hit by the Boomer or whoever you can pull behind some cover. Then, Hunters fill in either scratching at blind people or pouncing those who try and rescue the Survivor who was Smoker'd.
This, however, is not a fool-proof system. Not everyone waits for a coordinated attack (Especially when you are playing with three random people). If you have a group of Mavericks, it would do no good to try and talk them into an ambush anyway. In random games, you are sometimes best served by just following the lead of one other Special and hope that the other two follow suit.
