i had a fine game last night and the voice was all clear. i just tried it with a friend and the first game, without touching the mic settings from where they were last night, the mic was terrible my friend said. i went back to start screen and into options and moved sliders around then back to where they were and went back into game and it was fine again and he said pretty good quality also. ?????????????????????????????
That sounds like (no pun intended) like it might be the actual headset itself. Maybe there is a loose wire, or a bad connector somewhere?

Do you have another headset you can try???

no other headset but i really think it is the actual left 4 dead program. all through the games where it worked it was fine and i would have thought if it was a physical problem it would have been intermitant. it seemed to be simply that the game ignored the settings until i had reset them(??)

is it possible to use different sound card software with my onboard sound? it is on the asus p5b deluxe wifi ap.

Well, if you have more than one sound card on your PC, meaning the onboard one, and maybe a PCI Soundblaster or something, there could be a conflict with the two of them.

Usually it is best if you disable the on-board one and use the PCI one.

If you only have one card (the on-board one), and it works with all other games or applications just fine, then maybe you need to reinstall L4D, if you haven't already.

Or, you could also purchase an inexpensive aftermarket sound card, and attempt to use that one instead.
