this is going to be MY personal computer in my room, no one else in my family is going to use it so i need to hook up internet to this one, do i just need a modem or do i need to install a wireless card to my comp, or do i possibly need both?????

This is really only for L4D support, but since you asked so nicely...

If your family already has an internet connection, you can just hook up to that, either with a wired to a router, or wirelessly to a wireless compatible router or access points.

How does your family connect to the internet now?

If they have a wireless compatible router (like a Linksys WRT54G or something similar), then all you need is a wireless card to connect.

Generally, for gaming, you really want a wired connection, but if wireless is your only option, then you will just have to go with it.

thanks for the help so really all i need is the modem?

and we already have a modem and a wireless router hooked up and everything for our laptop
but i just wanted to know if i only needed to modem cause im on a really tight budget and installing wireless to my new PC it would had $50

or wait can i take like an ethernet cable and hook it up from the router to my new PC? would that work?

or on my modem there's 2 areas saying line 1 and line 2 is that anything really?

If your family has a router attached to a broadband connection, and you can reach that router with an ehterenet cable, then that is all you have to do. Your new computer will probably have a network card built into it, so you won't need to buy anything.

If you can't run an ethernet cable to the router, then you would need a wireless network card, assuming your family's router is wireless capable.

Your rmodem is just for dialup access, which you would not be able to play games on.

OK so my SMC networks router has 4 slots called LAN1,LAN2 and so on,so i can just take an Ethernet cable from that to my PC and it'll work without buying a new modem or getting the wireless card installed?

Correct-O-Mundo! You just need to have your network card's TCP/IP settings set to Dynamic or DHCP and you should be good to go.
