I think if you find these "parts" you shouldn't be able to equip them until you got into a safe room. Then you have to choose weather or not you want to get +25% more damage to special infected and lose 50% damage against normal infected.

Even so, now its getting too much like an RPG instead of a FPS.

I wouldn't mind though gathering random scrap items to create an improvised flame thrower. Cause the only thing as cool as Boom Booms, is Burn Burns.
