Halfer= Marine's name for half dead/infected
MVIBR=Middle Volga Integrated Biosphere Reserve (former Russian Fed. Now Red zone)
QTRH=Quick Transit Rescue Helicopter. The QTRH is a small helicopter which, while

begin very light, can carry up to 15 adults. This aircraft can be dropped via parachute. It is built for quick take offs and landings, and can be ready to fly with the pull of one lever. (The Emergency Lift lever, to be specifc)

The Marines slogged through the swamp, scummy, grey waters up to their knees. They were part of the Rapid-Assault-Team, or RAT for short. Designed to quickly and quietly clean out infected areas, they were one of the U.N's last lines of defense in these dark times. The "halfers" the marines were hunting in the MVIBR seemed to appear out of nowhere and attack just as quickly.
"Where's the GPS say we are?" Sgt Kiely asked PFC Doyle, the communications man, when the squad stopped to plan it's next step.
Doyle shook his head. "Can't get an accurate reading. These things don't work as well with the dishes as the do with the sat'lites"
He pulled out a map and compass, marked the position he calculated and wrote down the coordinates. In a pinch, old-style compass and map worked just fine. "Where we supposed to go?" Doyle asked. "Chasing Halfie" responded one of the marines. "If we need air support and the squadron tries to vector in on us using the GPS, we may not even ask. Saddle up!" Kiely said to his dozen man squad.
The resting Marines rose to their feet and resumed moving through the brush filled swamp.

A quarter of an hour later, the squad was moving through a small island, basically anopen patch of weeds and muck when one of the point men yelled "Halfer!" His shout was a lmost drowned by the screehing that had suddenly come from all directions.
"Shit! Form a defensive perimeter! Interlocking line of fire! Move!" The squad made a rough circle, facing in all directions.

Then, a disheveled figure burst out of the water 10 meters from the circle. Instantly, two Marines fired with their MK14 EBRs and tore the infected's head off. Almost as if someone had opened a door, infected began to swarm out of the swamp from all directions. All across the small island came scattering of cracks as the Marines opened fire.
The first line of the infected tripped and stumbled as the were dispatched by well-aimed bursts to the head. More cracks and more infected fell.
The undead continued to charge up towards the island, bodies piling high. Kiely assesed the situation quickly and gave orders to Doyle.

"Call up command , we need gunship support now!" Doyle opened the switch and began to type in the command.
Another screech rang through the swamp, and a hundred or more infected came charging forward. The Marines fired as fast as they could at the running forms, and
the ground became slick with gore. But there were too many of them, and they were too close for the Marines to get them before they reached them.

Momentarily dazed by nearby grenade explosion, Corporal Mifsud didn't see the infected running straight at him. The infected smashed into Mifsud, knocking him off his feet. Instinctivly, Mifsud rolled to his right. His helmet slammed into the infected's side, flipping them both. Mifsud spun around, ignoring the pain in his shoulder and lunged, drawing a large knife.
The infected grabbed on his arm and went for a bite, but the blade penetrated it's skull and it went limp. Mifsud shook his head and looked for his
dropped rifle.
PFC Seam wasn't looking for targets. He screamed as he fired wildly at the charging infected. A weight thudded heavily on his back and his scream was cut off as a chunk of his neck was torn out.
More infected piled on to him and his screams became shrill.
Kiely look grimly at the scene and threw in a frag, blasting the whole group.
All around the infected were creeping closer, and his men were running low on ammo. 30 meters to the left, more infected were pouring out of the muck.
Sgt. Kiely looked at the mess. it was time to bring put the heavy weapons.
"get the MSM-2 set up now!" 3 marines pulled off there packs and pulled out 3 boxes. In a few seconds, they had assembled a small, rotating barrel machine gun.
The heavy gun opened up on the oncoming wave, and the result was a blood cloud. But it wasn't enough.
Within seconds the infected had reached the Marine's circle. "ON THE RIGHT!" The warning voice over the squad circut was almost drowned out by the cracks and ratta tat tats of the rifle fire.
The Marines fire became concentrated on the mass of infected trying to clamber on the island. The shots from the squads rifles fired deep in the infected group, but where almost lost from view by the mulitudes swarming forth.
Suddenly, a marine was pulled into the muck,face first by a rotting hand. "!st squad pull back," Kiely ordered. The infected were getting to close and the muck was too thick. "Theres a hollow 2o meters back-head for it".
The marines began to move backwards. It wasn't much shelter, more like a small muddy trench by a tree, but it would help concetrate their fire. Mifsud was the last one in. PFC Gordon has his head ripped off before he made it off the island. The bodies of the dead became to pile up around the tree.

"Sir! I have airsupport on the horn!" Doyle said to Kiely.
"Bout damn time, give me that radio!"
"This is CC-130J Hercules . Sorry we're late. You have 40 mm cannon support"
"Do you see the small island near the treeline?"
"roger we have a visual on you and your squad"
"Level the damn treeline and drop the QTRH!"
"Affirmative. firing and dropping"

Almost instantly, the gunship's big autocannon fired on the trees. Clouds of dirt and debris were kick high the the air, and trees shattered like matchsticks. Limbs flew and even the sky seemed to quake at the deafening sounds of explosions and concussive blasts. Almost right on top of the hollow, the QTRH landed, parachute covering the slime and mud.

"1st squad, we are leaving!" Kiely said. The remaining marines clambered out of the hollow and scrambled to the QTRH. Doyle strapped himself into the pilot's seat and pulled the EL lever. The rotors began to turn and the QTRH pulled itself off the ground. The infected swarmed underneath, shrieking upward. Kiely down at the infected, then at his remaining men.
"I hate war.

I detest war.

I hate and detest those without minds or souls, those who kill without reason.
Those who did not warn us about the infected until innocent people were being pulled out into the streets be them. I hate war"

The heli flew off into the sky, which was as grey and ugly as the blood-stained muck below.
