What concerns me the most is that if this is a problem with a particular make of modem can this be patched by valve? I hope so : (
I think one of their previous patches took care of a problem with a certain modem that was having issues, so hopefully they will take care of this one too.

This is fixed for me now. I don't quite understand what I did to fix it, but here's my post on the steam forums about it. It may be of some help to someone.
I have a similar problem only i lose connection to party chat during versus games, co-op mode is fine though. This is the only game that i have noticed this issue with.
I have Virgin Media's 20mb connection with their standard modem and a checkpoint edge firewall however all ports required have been opened.
I think you made this same post on the GameSpot forums?
Anyway, I had this same problem with a Linksys router, I sort of fixed it by updating the firmware, it still happens every now and then, but not as often.
ok well i am having a similar problem. i play the 360 an i lose connection to every game i play online. Normally my internet runs great i don't have any lag problems with any other game. only with l4d2 i play for like 5 minutes until i get "retry connection to server" an then either i get back into the game or another message "Lost connection to server" an it puts me back to the versus lobby to the game lobby an even if i leave the lobby an try to rejoin its says full.
my router is Netgear WGT624
