Left 4 Dead 2 on new desktop!
heyheys.
so, i downloaded left 4 dead off of steam yesterday. did it work? nope haha.
i was wondering maybe you had an idea of why it starts crashing on the loading screen. it gets through the valve screen and then the next one, then crashes as its fading out. doesn't even make it to the menu screen and and i have to ctrl+alt+delete to get out of it cause its unresponsive.
i've tried making an icon on the desktop and changing it to borderless, didnt work.
This is brand new PC btw, its a Dell XPX 8100.
i've redownloaded steam and then re-installed left 4 dead 2, didn't work any differently.
i'm sure its not the graphics card, since you need a minimum of ATI x800 and mines a ATI 5770 which i've heard runs pretty well for L4D2.
I even tried switching the VGA cable in the back of the computer to see if I put it in the wrong spot, which I didn't cause neither fixed the problem.
any ideas i can try or anything?
(I'm going to try to update the drivers again later. Maybe that's the problem. But, I wanted to see what others might have in mind).

Hey man
I have the same exact problem (verbatim... just got a Studio XPS 8100 a week ago, but I have the nVidia gfx 260), but with L4D2 ( L4D runs fine, curiously enough). You find a fix brudda?

new DELL 8100 with ATI 5770 not working properly!
i have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM. Just got my dell xps 8100 with ati 5770 card.
L4D2 loads... but right before it gets to the real intro/menu it fades out after showing source logo.
Then it freezes my computer, and i have to kill it in task manager.
however... if i leave it as "not responding" then eventually it loads the game and i can play!
wtf is going on?

This problem wasn't fixed for me, per se, but I got around it. If you use the
-novid
steam startup option, it will load normally, without the steam logo or intro video. Cheers.

Go to the game in your steam library. Right-Click it and click Properties.
The properties screen pops up, look for the button that says "Set Launch Options" Its pretty damn big, you cant miss it.
Click it, and it opens, what is proabably a blank box. Copy and paste -novid to that box, and click OK.
And thats it!

Dude, that worked PERFECTLY. I guess my xps8100 is fine?! Does this mean it is steam/valve or maybe one of my drivers messing up the load (i was thinking soundcard)? I am able to play L4D2 flawlessly now. Does this mean i got one of the few "good" ati 5770's?
also, how do i get the console to pop up? the "~/`" button doesnt work nor does it do anything...

In your CFG folder there is a file called CONFIG.CFG. Open it with Notepad and see if there is a line in it that says:
bind "`" "toggleconsole"
if not, add a line and put the above text in and save it. Make SURE that the file does not get saved as CONFIG.CFG.TXT. Windows likes to add the TXT file extension. To make sure, check your Folder Options and make sure that Hide File Extensions For Known File Types is NOT checked.
