Why so many members with no posts?

After looking at a few pages of the member list, I noticed there are a lot of members with little-to-no posts. Why is this?

Was it some kind of marketing ploy that brought people in to sign up and never come back?

I've seen people that join just to advertise their video, website, etc. But that usually includes a post.

I've also seen people that join and only participate in blogs and whatnot, which is fine, but I haven't even seen like 10% of the members on this forum.

Is it just weird people being weird?

Some people sign up on a forum and either forget they did or just don't like the community after looking around.. maybe they did make a post, but it was spam, so it got deleted(although usually the member would be banned after that) and then there post count went back down to 0.

I'm not sure without looking... but I think a LOT of the zero post people are accounts that are created from a proxied ip address. We have an automatic ban much like an anti-spam real time black hole filter on a mail server for accounts that come in through a proxy. It lets them create the account but I think... and I stress again that I *think*... that those accounts can't post. Personally I'd rather the account was just deleted as it shows an inflated usercount that isn't really there.

Makes sense. I would like to see the accounts get deleted as well, but it's not a huge issue and doesn't affect much.

Another thing I noticed is that occasionally there are posts that are auto-moderated. I wasn't aware this happened. If the post isn't approved, it is never seen and it just... "goes away". If someone makes a post and it isn't ever approved by a mod, they aren't likely to come back. Those people's post count remains at zero as well.

Mods need to make sure they approve any "moderated" posts if they aren't against the rules.

I'm not a big writing in forums kind of person. But I'm here a lot just looking at the new threads and if I feel like adding my 2 cents I do^^.

That makes sense, but I don't think most people would sign up just to look a threads. As far as I know, there aren't any threads that you have to be signed in to view.

I don't think it happens to EVERYONE'S first post... but it does appear to happen to some. Probably specific forums that do it. I'll have to look into it further.

I don't exactly know. It took me awhile to get my first post. Maybe their scared someone will like bash on them if their post was stupid. Personally I like them way more than the people who have no clue what their talking about and spam it up and get like 50 post in one day :P

I've seen this in every forum I visit. Especially Sonic Retro for some odd reason... and even then Pending Members can hardly do anything there. :V Happens to me sometimes, maybe half the members signing up forget that they have an account, and never bother to check. I've forgotten a few forums i've joined in the past myself, especially since i'm a member of at least 5.

I was an admin on a now closed forum, the reason for that being that we were getting hundreds of people signing up and spamming, we gave up on banning each individual so did IP blocks instead then deleted the post. Maybe that happened here at an early stage
