Tank at beginning of Dead Center?
First lvl of Dead Center in VS mode, all of us have just grabbed weapons and med kits when a tank comes storming up onto the roof of the hotel, takes out all of us except me, I take out the tank from on top of a vent then save my team.
Anyone had this happen before?
(P.S. they kicked me after I killed the tank)

Unless the Tank was in the hands of a crappy player, how on earth did you kill it using just dual pistols and/or an axe?
(There isn't any room to kite/run from the Tank, nor are there Molotovs, so the only way to do damage is by using pistols.)
It's happened to me before a few times. It's a stupid programming glitch.

The rest of the players were kiting the tank around the roof while I was shooting from on top of the vent
We all almost went down
But I'm too awesome for that

LOL you guys now notice you get first map Dead Center Tanks? I get them constantly almost everytime I play Dead Center. Its why I dread Dead Center and I hate playing the map in Versus.
Making through that Tank is difficult with pubs with no brain. They usually just try to run it. I prefer taking the fight to the Tank on the roof where the game first starts. Everyone should have a melee. Melee weapons are way over powered, that Tank might as well come up stairs face to face with 4 autoshotguns spamming him. Without good support that Tank is toast, but its still annoying if you are just pubbing by yourself or YOU get to be that Tank right off the bat

Okay, I must be an idiot. I've been in that situation multiple times and there is NO WAY you can kite that Tank fast enough just using pistols and/or an axe. What about the other three players?
Um, there's no room to run. The Tank blocks the exit and swipes the Survivors down. Unless you're lucky and you slide past him down the stairs... in which case the other SI are having a picnic while they wait to ambush you.
(I realize there are those who claim otherwise, like the Smoker Of Life up above. Can anyone link a video and prove it?)
That Tank is gonna incap you in about 4 swipes a hell of a lot faster than your puny axe is gonna melee him - because to melee you have to get up close. Getting up close means you get incapped.
I don't get this logic.

You just do not play that much Versus. Do you know anything about kiting Tanks? Almost everyone who plays this game jumps over Tank punches and dodges. Once a Tank goes in swinging on a survivor, all the other 3 have to do is bumrush him from behind and if that Tank turns around to swipe, just jump back and dodge the punch. Almost everyone does this unless you have been playing the game less than a week. I have killed Tanks in much smaller confined spaces before, like a random room in a hall of Dead Air 2 without getting hit and by decent teams. You kill that Tanks support and there is hardly any reason for you NOT to kill the Tank. You just have to know when to jump his punches and read his movements. Juking Tanks is not rocket science.
Pertaining to Dead Center, you really underestimate the sheer power of melee weapons up close and personal. 4 hits can kill a 1000 HP Witch. Just have more than one person start swinging. Now, Versus Tanks have 6000 HP which means it takes 20 hits to kill a Tank, and before you tell me thats too much, how about I show you personally ingame how quick a Tank can die due to melee with people focusing on that Tank. Unless your entire team is dumb as fuck, and/or that Tank had no support, killing a Tank is easy peasy no matter where that Tank is.
As for the OP, he likely survived because the Tank was already near dead anyway so his team had the right thing in mind, but it could have been executed better. They had already swung their weapons and/or shot at him quite a bit and he dealt the final blow. Its not like they didnt do shit and he just stood there and shot the Tank and killed it himself. He just picked up the pieces and finished the job as the Tank was weak enough in the first place

I understand about kiting Tanks and whatnot, but the problem with this area is that you are in the safe room.
The Tank does not lose control and s/he can wait outside until the other Special Infected can kill the Survivors.
If you decide to rush him while the support is down s/he can just run back and punch when the Survivors get close. Or s/he can wait for the support to respawn.
You better believe that a decent ambush on four melee weapons and the Survivors are screwed.
That's not to say I haven't killed Tanks in this area, but most of the time the Tank runs into the safe room and gets kited, hit with melee weapons, shot, etc.
I think if the Tank played it right, s/he would be incredibly difficult to beat. Not to mention, most Tank spawns on this map suck on either end of the spectrum.

Crimson is right, you can kill a Tank quickly and easily with a melee.
I only play this game on Expert in coop or with 3 bots, but one of the worst places for a Tank spawn is the hole drop in the Swan Mainenence Room of Dark Carnival. You have to jump first and meet him with no where to run, no places to jump up to or on. Ordinarily, it`s a total killzone for the Tank, but I`ve survived that many times now.

Uhg, those tank spawns are always the most intense. I don't think I've ever had one where anyone died, which is surprising, but it's still nerve wracking.

Didn't valve nerf Tank melee damage right at the start with a patch? I'm sure it takes more hits now.

Yea. I'm pretty sure it only does half of what it used to on Tanks.
That would be 300 per hit, and 20 to kill.
It may even be lower, I'm not exactly sure, but I know that it really isn't practical to use on Tanks anymore.

They definitely did nerf melee weapons damage. It now takes 20 hits to kill a full 6000 health tank and it's a good thing they were nerfed since melee weapons taking 10 hits to kill a tank was way overpowered.

If it were up to me, we'd try to kill him every time. Unfortunately, most people aren't built like that. Like... I remove about a friend a week for being so unbearably soft.

I play a lot of scavenge so I don't run into tanks very often. Never tried the melee kill...I like using a tactical shotty against 'em.

Pretty sure it's not a set point amount for damage against a tank with melee. They had it set to 10% of the tank's max health every hit but i think it was dropped to 5%. So it will ALWAYS take 20 hits no matter what mode you are on.
That said... I'd love to pit my tank skills against "easy peasy" up there. All in fun of course. But I generally wipe people in that area or at LEAST get the majority of them and the SI teammates take the stragglers.
