Crashes because of update?

I have been playing L4D for a few weeks on my laptop just fine, until I downloaded the update today. I tried to join in my friend's game, but as soon as I joined a side L4D exited and closed. I could watch the game as a spectator, but as soon as I started to play, it quit on me. This also happened when I tried to play in vs or solo campaign. I could only find I problem already reported here similar to my problem, but the solution did not work. Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah I'm having the same problem.
Fine before the update, then with the update crash every time I try and play.
In single player this happens when I zoom into the character, multiplayer right when I load the map (since I usually load slower everyone else is already playing).

I'm surprised this is the only topic I've seen on the matter, so it must not be that widespread =/

Windows XP SP2
AMD Athalon 64 3400+ 2.2Ghz
Ati Radeon 9800 Pro with latest drivers as of today (jan.14 2009)
1.6G RAM
no DX 9.0x problems

Same problem here. Worked fine till update tonight now soon as the map loads I crash to desktop (l4d.exe shuts down). Single, campaign, vs, all of them crase

same i got the same issue right when i try to play the sound loops and then closes and brings me back to my desktop whats the problem

I put a smiley because it's not THEIR faults. But ya I feel you on the "not being able to play". I haven't played since I got out of school for Christmas break then wanted to play tonight!

I've played with no problems since launch, then after the update, it's all screwed up...

looks like the lower end pc's can't handle it. oh well, you guys can play css though, they have have zombie maps that are fun

Your assumption is a bit off there. Some of my friends with high level PC's have the same problem.

As do some with lower end PCs can play it just fine.

I'm also having this problem. I can navigate the game's menus just fine, but when a game loads (regardless of campaign, multi/single player, etc), it gets past the loading screen, and right before it allows me to take control of my character the game shuts down. I read somewhere else that it might be a problem with ATI video cards? I'm the only one in my group that has an ATI card and the only one having this problem, so I'm starting to believe it.

Same problem and I too am using a lap top. Everything worked great till patch installed tonight.

Game loads fine, soon as I take control of character, game crashes to desktop.

Tried standard fixes.....updating video and sound drivers, turning down video, defragging, etc, etc, etc. Nothing help.

There may be just a few post on this here but there are dozens of post about this on the Steam forums

Hey I thought it was only my computer that was doing that... but I guess it is the update. Because as soon as I join the survivors, it crashes to desktop without and errors. If I leave it on spectate, it's okay...

If you all posted your dxdiags we might be able to figure out why.

Also make sure you restart steam after game updates, otherwise problems similar to this have been known to occur.
