Someone really REALLY needs to work this into an L4D scenario:
Its already sort of representative of what happens when you stand in one place too long lol.
Both movies would work nicely. Dont have to adhere to the actual storyline of course.
Oh and a House of the Dead 2 scenario as well.
Same here with just designing the stages after the game and not necessarily the story of the itself.

Several times in HL2 you had to navigate through canals and drainage systems. These areas were often very tight, sparsely lit, and full of zombies. Some sort of sewer system/canals environment could make for an intense Left 4 Dead map.

This seems like an obvious place to ask rather than creating a new topic, but I seemingly saw a post quoting a dev saying that you will be able to make lots of custom content including new characters etc. Does that mean it will be possible to do series of maps with characters from movies/tv shows along with custom loading images for chapters? Also will they auto download? Sorry if this is commonly known, I haven't been carefully following this game!
As for map ideas, a set of maps set in a school, progressing through perhaps dorms then an auditorium hall, then an overgrown football field and escaping to a bus or something could be interesting. Especially if you could build a set of typical school custom characters such as a teacher, cheerleader, jock and nerd for extra cheese factor

One that I want to make is a double sky scraper similar to the twin towers, but you start in one tower, make it to about the 35th floor, then have to cross a bridge connecting the two towers make it up to the 60th floor, cross the bridge back over [36th-59th floors are blocked off]and then make it to the roof of the first building to be rescued by a helicopter, having your final stand off there on the roof.
I plan on working on this first thing when the L4D SDK is released..
EDIT: i made a post solely for this map. Please visit it and give me input on the map =]

How about a rock concert? You start out in the concert and people start getting infected. Pretty soon you have 50,000 infected in the main concert hall, so you have to literally run of the concert hall. You make your way through some executive offices, sky boxes, and into a parking structure with stairs down to street level. Once on the street, you see mayhem (people being attacked and turning into infected). You must make your way to a military base close by, passing through buildings to avoid the majority of the horde, or you can try to fight your way through the streets to the same location.

Random Idea / thing i may want to try if i ever get the gusto to map.
"Bandwith"
Street -> Casino -> Red Light District -> TV broadcast station -> Sub-basement -> Rooftop finale.
The survivors are sitting at home, staring at the blank TV screen when suddenly it jumps to life and some one proclaims that they are still alive and may have a way to save the day.
So they go out of the apartment, down to the streets to the only working payphone and give him a call, it turns out that two intern chuckle-heads are still alive and inside the local TV station, though trapped by the horde. They thank god that you didn't have cable and still didn't go digital and they say that they've found a frequency that can used to 'neutralize' the infected.
The good news is that their in a broadcast station capable of covering a mass metropolitan area. The bad news is one of the interns gambled off the amplifer to the radio station at the local casino "How Did i know the guy had a strait flush?" he proclaims.
So you set off to the casino "The lucky Lemon", they told you that the owner of the casino is the one who won the amplifier and probably put it in the safe, After walking up to the casino doors, the whole sign falls down and blocks the entrance, crushing a couple dozen zombies in the process, so you take a back entrance, go though the bottom floor of the machines, trying not to SHOOT any so that it says you win and the zombies come a runin.
After getting to the safe you start to open it, but the guy is paranoid so he's locked it with three doors or something. So as you open it with a loud howl you fight off a couple hordes of zombies, only to discover that the amplifier is not there. "Check again, it looks like a gas tank" Chuckle-head one says, but to no avail.
thinking that the manager may have thought it was a actual propane tank, they set off to the red light district to a little place where the guy had bar-b-qs. After fighting off the zombies they find the 'amplifer' gas tank and one survivor has to carry it with them, hampering the team and keeping them together.
They head out along the streets to the radio tower, where on the way you meet the cuckle-heads who are locked in the safe room and won't let you in till you head down to the sub basement and plug it in. So you do, but it takes some time to prime so zombies storm down as the whining noise of the equipment starting up draws them down.
Fighting your way back up, the chuckle-heads let you in but to no avail, their missing. Their behind another door to your left.
Chkl-head1: "Finaly nice to meet you face to, erm, door. I'm sorry we can't say hello"
Chkl-head2: "You've got red on you"
chkl-head1: "What he means to say is that Were not interly sure we're immune and we'd rather not take a chance, so if you could just go turn on the broadcast equipment we'll be in here."
chkl-head2: "Do hurry, theirs only three cups of yogurt left in here, some one went on a binge when he found out the world was ending"
chkl-head1: "Don't blame me, I'm the one who bought them"
So letting the morons fight it out over the last yogurt you head to the roof and plug in the equipment and start it up. The station slowly builds a charge, that as a side effect, draws EVERY zombie in a wide area to you.
After fighting off the hordes, the camera zooms in on the tower that emits a brilliant pulse of blue energy and the zombies all drop dead. The end.

That's quite an elaborate idea Bracket Fish. Sounds like a movie in its own right.
Here's what I was thinking: I noticed that somebody mentioned London and of course the 28 days/weeks later movies... how about a map that retraces the path of the characters from 28 Days? From the London hospital to an aprtment building, eventually making it to that mansion. The only difficult part would be figuring in the distance that they travel by car, so it may not work that well...
Also I was wondering if a map could be created where the survivors defend a stationary position. The AI Director seems to do a good job of throwing more zombies at you if you stay still, but maybe it wouldn't be very challenging and probably too boring. Is it possible to create a map with a time limit?

There are entities in source you can use to do a 'time limit' and besides the finale's are basically time limited till your ride arrives. All you'd have to do is basically script or trigger, or tell the AI director to start a finale while your holding still i assume.

New idea-how about a city or suburban map which is modeled to be months after the outbreak. This means there will be NO electricity. Everything will be pitch black (or near it) when your lights are off.

Another idea for a map would be I am Legend map. It would be good with using the house as a safe zone and having zombie try to break in from different point of entry.
Or start out somewhere else and have the home as a level and the basement zone as the escape. Or start out in the basement and have a car as an escape across town.
