Welcome to Hellview - the story you never hear
I awoke to the sounds of screaming outside. My room was empty as it usually was on Saturday mornings when I oversleep. Neither of my roommates were around the room and I could hear moaning in the hallway coupled with the blaring of alarms. I opened my door to take a look. The hallways were painted in the blood of students while severed limbs marked in very human bite marks lining the floors. Suddenly I noticed footsteps shuffling towards me. I turned to my right to see one of the students from my floor stumbling towards me with a face dripping in blood. "Dude what happened?" I ask him to no avail. "Are you okay?" I tried again but all I got in response was an empty moan. He came a few steps closer and tackled me. He bit into my flesh. I screamed out in pain, kicked him off, and in a rush of adrenaline smashed his face into the floor. I pounded and pounded until his body finally stopped moving. I laid down as I felt the last of my strength seeping from the wound on my shoulder.
I slowly dragged myself back into my room with a steak of blood in my wake. The torn tendons in my left shoulder made it difficult for me to pull myself into my bed, but at last I had managed. My energy was quickly fading away, and a deep deep sleep quickly took over me.
In my sleep I had a strange dream. I don't remember much of the dream. What I do remember was a black abyss and very hollow feeling. There were many deranged images of torture and death, but none of them really stuck in my mind. One instance from the dream does stick with me, however, is the very end of the dream. What I still recall is walking down a long black hallway, and the voice of a little girl coming from a room at the end of the hallway.
"Please someone help me!" the girl screamed. She couldn't have been older than seven or eight by the sounds of her voice. There was a crash and the sound of broken glass followed my screech of pain. "Shit" I thought to myself as I ran down the hall. I saw two men standing over the girl who was lying in a ring of broken glass from an over turned mirror. One man was beating the girl with a club fashioned from the leg of a wooden table, while the other man just watched. I saw the girl's face through the watching man's legs. She was crying covered in blood and bruises. I couldn't bring myself to look away and saw her mouth the word "help" before the club smashed right through her skull sending grey matter and blood across the room. The man watching started laughing and turned around and looked right at me. His face was priceless, like a little girl staring at the face of a pissed off tiger. I flew in the room trying to yell at the men, but all that came out was a harsh growl that sounded like a lion with its throat torn out. I grabbed the man who turned to me by the wrist and to my surprise tore his hand off. He started screaming and spraying blood everywhere. The man with the club rushed me with the club raised high above his head. The man took a swing and hit me directly in my wounded shoulder, but surprisingly I felt no pain. I quickly shifted my weight lowering my center of gravity and slammed the man to the ground, falling on top of him with my knee in his groin. He let out a sharp scream of agony and I raised my arm to start punching when I realized my fingers had large talons on them now. So like a bird of prey I started ripping and tearing at my opponent's face, chest, and throat. Soon the man was no more than a pile of mush with ribbons of flesh adorning a pool of blood like a macabre rug. Standing up I slowly turned to the man with no hand, mostly for dramatic effect, and saw that all the color left from his face. I couldn’t tell if it was because of blood loss or sheer horror, but he passed out. So I plucked the table leg off the ground, raised it high in the air, and took one hard swing a the guy's head as I watched it explode across the room. Coating the walls, furniture, and myself in goo and blood.
Turning to the body of the girl I saw how the glass had shattered perfectly making it look like an aura around her corpse. A perfect frame of sorrow and catastrophe. I picked the little girl up and placed her in the bed of the room I even tucked her in and kissed where her forehead would have been goodnight. Then I moved to the chair to keep watch, but because of my latest efforts destroying the beasts who attacked the little girl, I passed out in my dream.
Right when I fell asleep in the dream I awoke. I looked at my surroundings and realized I was no longer in my room. Based on the windows both on the wall opposite the door and the wall I was facing I realized I was in the last room on the northwest side of my dorm building. The room was torn apart with an upturned bed, a broken table missing a leg, and a mirror thrown to the ground shattered in a puddle of blood. I scanned the rest of the room and saw a butchered body with chunks of meat laying around it in a pool of blood and skin, and a body with no hand and a shattered head. Finally I saw the last piece. The nearly headless girl tucked into the bed. I saw her and I thought I was in a nightmare. I ran to the bathroom and turned on the lights, but to no avail. I stepped out and searched the bodies. The pile of mush in a leather jacket had a flashlight in his pocket. I tried to pick it up, but my claws were too large. So I jammed it between my palms and twisted the cap with my teeth to turn it on. I rushed back into the dark bathroom and shinned the light into the mirror to realize in horror what had happened. I was still in my camouflage hoodie I was wearing last night when I was bitten. The hoodie and my shirt I wore underneath were both covered in blood from the bite. My jeans were torn and at the knee and shards of glass stuck to them. But the most horrifying part of the picture was not what I wore, but what I was. My flesh was a dull lifeless grey, and my eyes hollow and devoid of any color. My teeth were filled to sharp points, and worst of all I wasn't breathing. My chest did not heave up and down in the slightest, and I didn't feel air rushing through either my nose or my mouth.
I dropped the flashlight, howled like a tortured dog, and flew out of the room. I didn't know where I was running I just knew I had to leave my dorm room. I got outside and saw that the streets were littered with bodies and broken vehicles. Alarms, gunshots, screams, the screeches of car breaks, and the unifying howl of what could only be described as zombies filled the air. I ran and ran, but none of the undead creatures seemed to take notice of me. They just shuffled around me.
When I realized they paid me no mind, I suddenly was hit with a ravaging hunger like a ton of bricks. Just then a smell hit my nose the aroma I could never quite explain in any words then sweet smell of the feast of the gods themselves. Nothing compared to the smell. The people in the streets were all slowly walking towards the smell and I realized they were all heading towards it. The line was much too long for me so I ran across the hoods of broken down vehicles. As I got closer I noticed a crowd of people rushing a building only to get mowed down by gunfire. The smell was stronger and was eminating from the building.
"Those bastards want it all for themselves!" I thought. "They're killing everyone, I should go around back and see if there is another way in" The building was a large apartment building just off the campus of my university. It was very typical box building with windows and fire escape ladders in the back. The ladders were all pulled up, but a van was crashed in the alley right next to them. Cramps from my hunger were getting stronger, and so was the smell. I scrambled up the van and ladder as quickly as awkwardly as I could getting the barings of my new claws. I smashed the window of a third story building and snuck inside the room where the smell was at its strongest. When I snuck into the room I heard some voices outside the door
"Did you hear that," the voice of a teenage girl sounded "it sounded like breaking glass!"
"Your just paranoid Jenny these things can't fly." responded the voice of what sounded like a young man from new jersey.
"Yeah, besides its probably just falling debris this city has turned to shit sicne everything went ape shit anyways dude." Came the voice of what sounded like a jockey frat boy.
"Ugh you guys are such idiots!" came Jenny's voice again.
"Whatever lets finish sweeping this floor and find a good room to camp out in for the night" came the voice of the jock/frat boy again. They started pounding at the door, and I started to panic. I thought of a place to hide and realized that they would look in all the closets so I grabbed a sheet from the bed flew out the window and down to the 2nd level on the escape ladder and draped the sheets over myself. Finally I heard the door bust open. I could tell they entered the room because the smell got stronger still. They must have searched the room for twenty minutes before moving on. When the smell reached its faintest I decided to quickly scale the ladder and drop into the newly abandoned room to wait out the great smelling kids and hope they didn't come back. I heard the moan of one of the people from the streets and then some gunshots, and a body hitting the floor.
"Got one!" I heard faintly through the wall. As I heard the body hit the ground the image of the little girl slammed back into my head. I had to wrap my "hands" around my mouth to keep from roaring out in anger. These were not typical college students, they were the same as those monsters that killed the little girl back there, and they were killing my unarmed people by the hundreds with tons of weapons. It was clearly now my duty to watch out for the welfare of my people and to get them and myself to the sweet smelling nectar of these beasts.
I decided not to wait in the open and hid under one of the beds in the cheap apartment room and wait until nightfall when the beasts were most vulnerable. When it was dark out I slid out from under my bed noticing the wound on my shoulder for the second time. I was again amazed that I felt nothing; no pain, no fatigue, and still no breathing. I felt nothing but my insatiable hunger. The hunger for whatever that sweet sweet smell was. The monsters seemed to have been patrolling the hall ways in shifts as the smell would come and go and then it would switch to a similar, yet distinctly different aroma. I waited for the opportune moment latest in the night when fatigue would most likely be at its greatest. The aroma that I found to belong to Chad, the kid from New Jersey was the only one in the hall. I stood in wait by the door for Chad to pass. First was the flashlight. I started getting antsy. Then the light passed and the smell was the strongest it had ever been. I could barely contain myself and academically moaned with delight. The smell stopped. The flash light glared past me as monster known as Chad started inching towards the room. I couldn't contain myself anymore and I turned out in front of the door frame and startled the creature into dropping his flashlight. The light rolled and illuminated his face. I could see nothing but terror as he stood not able to even let out the slightest yelp of fear out. The feeling was satisfying like scaring the now handless and headless monster who beat the poor girl. I took action quickly. I clapped Chad's head digging my hooked fingers into his eyes, mouth and cheeks. I tore quickly, and to my delight we fell directly into the light from his flash light. I saw the tears across his flesh and his now missing left eye on my right index "finger". I hissed with joy as his scream was muffled by the blood flooding into his throat. I just kept tearing and tearing until his body went numb and the aroma had reached an intoxicating effect. At this point I couldn't take it any more and I sunk my fangs into the animal's flesh. The taste was not only satisfying my hunger to a degree, but it was ten times better than the smell. Greed took over and I must have eaten almost every internal organ I could name. The blood tasted like wine fit for a king, and the muscle as though it were the most grand steak god had ever eaten. Upon satisfying my hunger to a degree I could stand and I came up with a plan. I dragged the bloody corpse behind me down stairs to my friends at the front door of the apartment building, and proceeded to smash the door open.
"Come, come" I called in a dialect of grunts and groans I didn't know I had learned "there are more upstairs!" I dragged the body of the Chad creature along the floor and up the stairs. We finally reached the third floor and I swung the door open following the hidden scent to the door where the murderers slept.
"Do you hear that moaning?" Jenny called to her pack
"Yeah, what the fuck is it?!" the unrecognizable of a forth brute answered
"Oh shit, no!" The jock realized "Chad! Chad where are you?" he flew threw the door. "oh no no no no no…" he started crying.
"Feed my children!" I howled and kicked the jock back into the room throwing Chad's cadaver with him. I laughed manically as I heard the screams of despair as my wonderful sweet children fed upon their murderous prey.
Once there was nothing left of the swine I headed to the roof to survey the city. Our city. My city. I stood there for hours looking around, for the most part the city was silent. Only the hungry moans of my children could be heard for miles. The hunger saddened me not for my own sake, but for that of my pained children. Suddenly a wind blew from the north. At first the wind blew only the smell of fire and debris, but after a long time I smelled a familiar yet distinctly different sweet smell. The aroma entered my nose, and my hunger returned with a force it had never had before and I spoke only one line before chasing after the sent.
"Fresh meat!"
